2024 Walla Walla Sister City Project ③

13/10/2024

Today, we went to see the Bunpoji Temple and Futamura Shrine festival from the morning. Last year, I brought an Australian boy to carry the taiko (drum) float, but this time, we decided just to watch.

This festival is from the community where we lived before moving to our current house, and the locals welcomed us warmly. It's been about seven years since we moved, and it truly feels wonderful to be welcomed back like this.

He has visited Sasayama many times and has attended the Kasuga Shrine festival in the castle town several times, but this was his first time at this district's festival.

After watching the majestic taiko floats from seven villages and participating in the mochi throwing, we left the area.

Next, we visited a long-established rice cracker shop in Tamba City, which was one of his wishes.

He had visited this place about 12 years ago with another host family, and using his memory and Google Maps, we managed to find it. He had prepared a detailed shopping list and ended up buying so much that the shopkeeper had to call for help with the wrapping!

The person who came to assist with the wrapping was the shopkeeper's mother, and the current owner is the fourth generation. When our guest mentioned that he had been there 12 years ago, she remembered him, and they had a great conversation. It seems he really loves these rice crackers, asking if there's a way to order them online and so on!

After returning home, we relaxed a bit. Another acquaintance unexpectedly came to visit, leading to a new encounter for us as well. It's true that fun people attract more fun people! 😆

Tomorrow, three days after his arrival, we will finally have a welcome party. It will be a casual potluck gathering. While coordinating with several other acquaintances, we plan to visit Tachikui in the morning and Okumo in the afternoon. The circle of connections is expanding beautifully! 🥰
